Welcome to EU Referendum with Lucy! I am an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Warwick and I hold a PhD in politics with a specialism in democracy and the European Union.
Incredibly frustrated by the coverage given to the EU referendum debate so far and despairing at the lack of objective and accessible information about the UK’s relationship with the EU, and with one month to go until the big day, it’s time to look at the facts (or at least get as close as possible to the facts in this minefield of vague statistics and changing definitions).
Having been asked by friends, family and colleagues for info that’s going to enable them to make an informed decision on the referendum I have decided to put my understanding of the situation in one place and between now and 23 June I will be updating this blog with (hopefully) digestible analysis of the UK’s current relationship with the EU and what it is reasonable to expect the future might hold, whichever way the vote will go. Whilst I have reached my own conclusions and know how I will vote, I am not seeking to influence anyone. I simply ask that those who are interested and intending to vote will take the opportunity to make an informed choice in one of (if not) the biggest decisions on the future of our country we’re likely to be able to make in our lifetime.
Questions, comments, suggestions and requests are welcome!
